Could be ocean or lake, though usually the former -- the underwater equivalent of topography. Or the measurements that create the underwater equivalent, or something like that. When a ship makes a sounding to make sure it won't run aground ("By the mark four!") it's doing bathymetry. Coined in the 1850s from Ancient Greek roots bathús, deep + métron, measure.
