entactogen (en-TAK-toh-jen) - n., a psychoactive substance that produces experiences of emotional communion, oneness, emotional openness, and so on.

Also more commonly called empathogens, this class includes MDMA (ecstasy) and related compounds as well as many others. I came across this when researching entheogen yesterday, and put it at the head of the queue. Empathogen ("engendering empathy") was the original term, coined independently in 1983 by American psychologists Ralph Metzner and David E Nichols, but the latter didn't like the pathos connotation and so coined this from en-, within + tacti-, touching + -genēs, born ("engendering touching within").
