A type of haematophagy, blood-eating, and in contrast to solenophagy, feeding on blood directly from blood vessels. Mosquitos are solenophagous, while vampire bats, who cut open the skin and lap up the bleeding, are telmophagous. Stem is from Ancient Greek télma, pool/puddle. (Soleno- is from Ancient Greek sōlḗn, channel/duct.)
