keelson - n., a fore-and-after timber above and attached to the keel, to strengthen it and fasten transverse members to it.


Of Scandinavian origin, either directly or through Dutch it looks like, but ultimately from Old Norse kjölsvīn, literally keel-swine, though why a pig is anyone's guess. Possibly because the hog is fastened above it?
