Maybe I'll start reserving Fridays for Forgotten English words. Or at least, only post them on Fridays.

hochle - "To tumble lewdly with women in open day." —John Mactaggart's Scottish Gallovidian Encyclopedia, 1824

According to Jamieson's 1825 Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language (which quotes the above definition), it could also mean to walk with short steps or to shuffle, shamble, walk with difficulty.

Hmm, so a lusty young man and a very old one could both hochle, but the activity might be completely different.

I love that word. I think I love the definition even more.

I'm trying to decide whether the plural was being impersonal, or tumbling with just one woman doesn't count.
