outré - adj., beyond the bounds of what is considered usual or proper, unconventional, bizarre.


In use since the early 18th century. And, yes, it is related to outrageous, but not as closely as you might think: from French, from Old French outré, defeated, from the past participle of outrer, to pass someone, from from outre, beyond -- of which the root of outrage is a derivative. Looks a little circular there to me, but I'm just an armchair etymologist.
