It's Forgotten English Friday again:
hingkponk - "An imposter. Lakeland, Westmoreland. —Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary, 1898-1905"
Searching about reveals that it's also spelled hinkaponk, and that some Harry Potter think this is the origin of the name of Rowling's hinkypunks -- even though hinkypunks are figures from English (specifically, Dartmore) folklore, as a search of Google Books would reveal. Ah, the vanity of human wishes.
Admin Note: It looks like posting will be light for the next week or so due to external obligations. Will try to check in, but no promises until things settle down.
