hocket - n., in polyphonic music, the technique of splitting a melody between two voices such that alternately one voice sounds while the other rests.

Usually note-by-note, but can be by groups of notes. The term comes from medieval music (specifically, French motets -- in Middle French, hocquet meant hiccup, sudden interruption) but is used today in some contemporary music genres.
