parbuckle - n., a rope sling for rolling cylindrical objects up or down a ramp; a double sling made from a single rope for raising or lowering an object vertically.


Also, of course, a verb, to raise or lower with such a sling. Rather than give the detailed explanation in the definition, a picture of, at least, the first kind; in case it's not clear, it's a single rope, with a loop between the men's feet. Pronounced PAHR-buhk-l. First recorded in the 1620s as an alteration of parbunkel, but beyond that origin is unknown.
