assoil - v., absolve, pardon, acquit; atone for, expatiate.


What happens to absolve when you pass it through medieval French (as Anglo-Norman assoilen, from Old French assoldre) instead of taking it directly from Latin. Both words ultimately come from absolvere, to set free, with a root sense of solvere, to loosen. I don't think I've seen it used outside of medieval romances or would-be Arthuriana. Pronounced uh-SOIL.
