speedwell - n., any of several plants or shrubs of the genus Veronica of the snapdragon or figwort family, with small bluish flowers and opposing leaves; sometimes specifically Veronica officinalis or V. arvensis.


So named because its petals fade and fall quickly. Many have medicinal properties. Named such since at least the 1500s.
