lanuginous
Sep. 15th, 2009 07:37 amlanuginous - adj., covered in soft, short hairs, downy.
Because, yes, we needed a $20 word for downy, or did in the 1570s, when we borrowed it from Latin lānūginōsus, downy, woolly, itself from lānūgō, wooliness, down, (from lāna, wool) plus an adjectival ending. Also spelled lanuginose, but that's not as pretty. Pronounced luh-NYU-juh-nus.
