cincture - n., a girdle, belt, sash; something that encircles or surrounds; the act of encompassing or encircling. v.t., to gird, encompass.


Sometimes specifically a part of clerical vestments. Pronounced SINGK-cher, used since at least 1587, from Latin cīnctūra, girdle, from cīnctus, past participle of cingere, to gird.
