rotifer - n. any of various microscopic multicellular aquatic organisms of the phylum Rotifera, having a wheel-like ring of cilia at head.


Which cilia rotate to both move it through the water and draw food into its mouth -- whence the name, meaning "wheeled-thing" in Latin, pronounced ROH-ti-fer. About 2200 species have been described, most of them between .1 and .5 mm in length. Here's some pix, more pix, and flix.
