co-mother-in-law - n., the mother-in-law of one's son or daughter, or the mother of one spouse in relation to the parents of the other.


One of a suit of uncommon co-in-law terms, which appear to have originally been coined to translate from languages that have terms for extended in-law relations (such as French and Greek), but since carried on in a limited way in English. They are seen as somewhat awkward, however, and as Wikitionary notes, once the couple have a child, the term is likely to shift to co-grandmother.

In my family, we just use the Yiddish word machetunim. Now that I think of it, though, that word is plural, and I've never heard a singular form.
