burgeon - v.i., to put forth new buds or greenery, sprout; to grow or develop rapidly.


Used since at least the late 13th century as burjonen or burjon, from Anglo-French burjuner, from burjun, bud, from Old French burjon from a conjectured Vulgar Latin form *burriōn(em), accusative of *burriō, from Late Latin burra fluff, apparently from the down covering some buds (like willow catkins?). Pronounced BUR-juhn.

I don't think I've ever heard this used in a biological context, but encounter it regularly with general meaning, almost always in gerund form.
