blench - v.i., to flinch or turn aside from lack of courage.


Also, a variant of blanch, to make or become pale or white, in part from the similarity but also because of pale with fear, but they are otherwise different words: this blench ultimately comes from an Old English word blencan, to deceive (and boy would I like to see the intermediate stages of meanings for this one), while blanch is from French, related to blanc, white. Pronounced as spelled, insofar as you can say that in English.
