pirl - v.t., to spin, as a top; to twist or twine.


As in, for the latter, making a yarn string or thin rope. Origin unknown, though Webster's 1913 unabridged, apparently the last dictionary to include it, speculated there's a relationship with purl, as in to flow around. Certes, it's pronounced the same, but I'm dubious.
