selcouth (SEL-kooth) - adj., (arch.) strange, unusual, rare, wondrous.


It may look Scottish (and indeed it can be found in the works of Sir Walter Scott) but is mainline English going back to Old English as seldcūth, from seld(an), seldom + cūth, known. That said, 'tis selcouth itself, being seldom seen in these latter days.
