strickle (STRIK-uhl) - n., a straightedge used to level off a dry measure, such as grain; (metalurgy) a template used to shape a foundry mold in sand or earth; an implement for sharpening scythes, typically a piece of wood smeared with grease and sand. v., to level with a strickle.

The verb is also "to strike," and a dry measure so level has been "struck" -- which gives us the deep root, though strickle was already a separate word in Old English. Myself, I use the back-side of a knife when measuring flour.
