macédoine (mas-i-DWAHN) - n., a salad of small pieces of fruits or vegetables; a mixture, medley.

From French for Macedonia, natch, so nasalfy that n as much as you can, borrowed in 1820. Before that, the trail gets cold -- the term was first used in France of the food around 1740. It is sometimes suggested that the name is an allusion to the medley of peoples in Macedonia, but the name of the salad was used before Macedonia was known in western Europe for being ethnically diverse, which makes that derivation anachronistic. Either way, I'll have another helping thanks.

Huh. I always thought the name derived from the style of dish it was properly served in.

I haven't come across that theory. Possibly it's the other way around?
