apterous (AP-ter-us) - adj., without wings.
Not necessarily a significant condition, given most of us are, but when one species among, say, an order of winged animals is wingless -- as in apterous insects -- that's significant. Adopted in 1775 from Greek ápteros, from a(n)-, not + pterón, wing + adjectival ending.
