That's 20,000 feet for those with wonky demetricators. The Hadal zone is, well, so deep it might as well be in Hades. Adopted from French in 1959, where it was coined around that time from Hadès, from Greek Hades. Note that this would be in the year before Piccard and Walsh first sounded the Mariana Trench, that Hadal zone par excellence.
