lissajous (LEE-sa-jew) - n., as Lissajous curve or Lessajous figure, any of a class of complex harmonic plane curves.

Named in 1857 after Jules Lissajous, who investigated them and developed a mechanism for producing them physicially. A generation ago, the commonest way to generate them was oscilloscope -- now we use computers. Wikipedia has examples and links, but fails to point out how delicious the word sounds.

Technically, the analemma is not a lissajous curve, but I tend to call it one anyway.
