nidifugous (neye-DI-fyuh-guhs) - adj., leaving the nest shortly after hatching.


Used of birds mostly, but also other animals. Ducks and chickens, for example. Coined some time around 1900, give or take 5 years, from Latin nidus, nest + fugere, to flee.
