The example given by many dictionaries is among the Basque, but this is hardly limited to them. Can also result in purification rituals. From this is named couvade syndrome, or sympathetic pregnancy by the partner of a pregnant woman. Borrowed around 1865 from French, from Middle French couver, to brood, hatch.
