obvolute (OB-vuh-loot) - adj., rolled or turned in itself, having overlapping margins.


As you can see, this isn't easy to describe without a diagram. Imagine a leaf or fern before it has opened, coiled in on itself such that the edges overlap -- that would be obvolute. Borrowed in the 1750s from Latin obvolūtus, past participle of obvolvere, to cover by wrapping, from ob- in the sense of over + volvere, to roll or turn.
