advert (ad-VERT) - v., to turn attention (to); to remark or comment, make reference (to).

Almost always used with "to" after it. The first sense is a survival of the root source of advertisement -- advert acquired its current sense in the 15th century, having meant to perceive, to pay heed before that, being derived from Anglo-Norman advertir, from Old French, from Latin advertere, to pay attention, from ad-, toward + vertere, to turn. So an ad is something that makes you turn toward it.
