rataplan (ra-tuh-PLAHN) - n., the sound of continuous beating. v.i., to make such a sound.


As in the beating of a drum or the hooves of a horse. Yeah, go fig, we have a word for it -- but not only do we have a word for it, but so do the French, as we borrowed it from them around 1848, where it was originally ran tan plan, making it an onomatopoeic word. We haven't had enough of those around here lately.

This may be where some of my more musically inclined coworkers have heard the term. (Others know it as the name of Lucky Luke's dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rantanplan).)
