xenodochial
Sep. 21st, 2010 07:20 amxenodochial (zee-noh-DOH-kee-al) - adj., hospitable, friendly to strangers.
Amusingly enough, this all-but-forgotten word is popping up in computer lexicons -- a xenodochial application is user-friendly to the first-time user, and managers of agile development projects are enjoined they must be xenodochial for the project to be successful, given the number of stakeholders they must engage. Or something like that. This one was borrowed directly from Greek xenodochē, banquet for strangers. A concept they needed a word for, given their strong emphasis on host law. See also xenodochium, a guest house in a monastery for the temporary accommodation of guests or pilgrims.
