ombrometer
Oct. 19th, 2010 07:16 amombrometer (ohm-BRAW-mee-tuhr) - n., a rain guage, often specifically one capable of measuring very small amounts of precipitation.
No, nothing to do with shadows. Also called a udometer or pluviometer, and in the specific sense a micropluviometer or trace recorder. Ombrometer and pluviometer are pretty much the same thing, only using Greek and Latin root, respectively: rain in that lanugage + -meter, and since the latter is a Greek root you'd think ombrometer would be the way to go, but pluviometer is actually more common, having been the one actually coined in English -- for we borrowed ombrometer from French.
