sinopia (si-NOH-pee-uh) - n., a reddish-brown ochre pigment; (Art) the under-drawing of a fresco.


The latter because it was (is?) often done in former. It's also used in oil painting, and frequently in the ancient world. According to Wikipedia, its current standard definition is #CB410B or RGB=(203, 65, 11). Borrowed in the 1840s from Italian, from Latin sinopis, from Greek sinōpis, from Sinōpē, an ancient seaport in Paphlagonia (in present-day northern Turkey), from whence the pigment came.
