Also, a kind of wine grape -- but more pertinently, it's the French for raven or crow (technically the former, but in common use the latter as well). I'm not finding when English borrowed the word, and whether it already had the color sense when we did.

Eh, I didn't know that. Since a 1943 movie, it is also synonym (in France) for blackmailer.
