omasum (oh-MAY-suhm) - n., the third of the four chambers in the stomach of a ruminant.
The other three being, in order, the rumen, reticulum, and abomasum. The omasum is also called the psalterium (from its many folds of the lining supposedly looking like a psalter) or the manyplies (er ... ). The word was borrowed around 1700 from Latin omÄsum, bullock's tripe -- it being one of the more edible parts of the stomach.
