irredenta (ir-i-DEN-ta) - n., a region that is related ethnically or historically to one country but is controlled politically by another.
Borrowed in 1914 from Italian, from the phrase Italia irredenta, Italy unredeemed, referring to Italian-speaking territories under the control of other countries. Irredentism is a political movement to "redeem" such territories, in the sense of the first country taking it from the second. This is of course often problematic as most such territories are ethnically mixed.
