subitize (SOO-bi-teyez) - v., to perceive at a glance the number of items in a group.


Without counting, that is -- to intuitively apprehend how many there are. The limit for humans is about seven, though over five is hard for many people. The term was coined by psychologist E.L. Kaufman and/or his co-authors in a 1949 paper, from the Latin subitus, sudden, unexpected. Wikipedia has more for the curious.
