immane (im-MAYN) - adj., monstrous in size or character.


So on the one hand huge, vast, prodigious, on the other cruel, savage, perverse. The root meaning (borrowed in 1602) of Latin immānis is both brutal and enormous, but it seems to come from im-, not + mānus, good, indicating the moral component came first; also, the Romans were sizist.
