awner (AW-nuhr) - n., a machine for removing the awns from grain.


Which, of course, is not very helpful if you don't happen to know that awn is the bristles on the head of grain of any kind of grass. The machine was named and presumably invented in the 1880s. Awn itself goes back to at least the early 13th century, from either Old English or its Old Norse cognate.
