miniver (MIN-uh-ver) - n., a white or light gray fur used as a trimming on garments, now chiefly on ceremonial robe.
In the middle ages, more extensively, though it was still expensive -- so mostly just by nobles. The fur seems to have not necessary been the ermine used today, but could well have been from any of various animals the right color. In use from at least the 13th century, from Old French menu vair, small vair, the last being a type of squirrel fur.
