pannage (PAN-idj) - n., pasturage for pigs in a forest; the acorns, beechmast, and other nuts on which pigs feed in a forest; the right to pasture pigs in a forest; payment for such pasturage.

Because rights to the commons is always a complicated matter. It is still practiced today as part of the commons in the New Forest in south England. Dates to at least the 13th century, from Anglo-Norman pasnage, from Old French, from Latin pastiƍ, feeding, from pascere, to feed.
