Borrowed around 1750 from Greek apopemptikós, of or pertaining to sending away, from apopémpein, to send away, dismiss (from apo-, away/apart + pémpein, to send, dispatch) + -tikos, the ancestor of -tic.
It is pure coincidence that this came up as the last Pretty Good Word for the year -- I'm off through New Years. Have a safe and happy holiday season, whichever ones you may observe, and see you again in January.
