damascene (DAM-uh-skeen, dam-uh-SKEEN) - v., to decorate (metal, esp. steel) by inlaying with another metal or by etching. n., an article or design produced by such process. adj., of, relating to, or the result of this process.

Also, when capitalized, of or relating to Damascus, or an inhabitant of Damascus, which is where the process got its name -- not because the city is particularly known for the process, but because in the late 14th century the result was thought to resemble damask silk, which is indeed associated with Damascus both for manufacture and trade of it.
