achalasia (ak-uh-LAY-zhuh, ak-uh-LAY-zhee-uh) - n., the inability of a circular muscle to relax.


Especially in the esophagus, but also the rectum. This constriction typically causes the passage above the sphincter to become dilated above it, as things get blocked up. Coined in the 1910s from Greek roots a-, not + chálasis, relaxation, from chalân, to loosen.
