fard (FARD) - n., makeup or paint applied to the face. v., to paint the face or cheeks; (arch.) to gloss over.
Also includes war paint and, I suspect, those black lines some athletes put on to reduce cheek glare. Borrowed in the early 15th century from Middle French, from Old French fard, make-up, cosmetics, from farder, to apply makeup, from Germanic roots -- the PIE root *perḱ- also gave us German Farbe, color and Latin pulcher, beautiful.
