pochismo (paw-CHEE-zmaw, poh-CHEEZ-moh) - n., an English word or expression borrowed into Spanish; a form of speech using many such words, Spanglish; an adopted U.S. custom or attitude.

Part of the charm of Frontera EspaƱol, at least to this Anglo ear. But then there are the complaints, coming from native speakers on both sides of the border with Mexico, of people claiming to be bilingual but instead speak pochismo. (And, of course, there are claims like F.G.Beraza's that "not a single pochismo has added to the beauty of our Spanish language.") The first pronunciation is the Spanish one, the second the English one. Appeared in both languages along the U.S-Mexico border in the 1940s, from pocho, Spanish slang for someone of Mexican heritage who adopted American customs.
