This last is possibly because it was coined (in 1873) from ectopia, itself borrowed (in 1847) from medical Latin, coined from Greek éktopos, from ek- = ex-, out of + tópos, place. In any case, the most commonly heard phrase is an extopic pregnancy, in which the fertilized egg implants anywhere other than the uterine wall -- but Wikipedia has a long list of extopias.
