Theme week: plants.
agrimony (AG-ruh-moh-nee) - n., any of several herbaceous perennial plants (genus Agrimonia) with compound pinnate leaves and spikes of small yellow flowers.
Members of the rose family. Formerly much prized as for its medicinal properties, especially for treating wounds, to the point of being sometimes called a heal-all panacea (though not by physicians, I'm guessing) -- and is in fact an astringent for the tannins in its leaves and stems. Used since at least the 14th century, borrowed from Old French aigremoine or egremoine, from Latin agrimōnia, alteration (perhaps by association with ager field) of earlier argemōnia, from Greek argemōnē, poppy.
