ecru (EK-roo, EY-kroo) - n., a pale grayish-yellow color, beige.

Literally, the color of unbleached linen. Per Wikipedia, until the 1930s it was considered a synonym for beige but since then as has been thought of as a somewhat darker shade. Borrowed in the 1830s from French écru, raw, unbleached, from Old French escru, from es-, thoroughly (from Latin ex- in its intensifying sense) + cru, raw (from Latin crudus, raw, from whence crude).

huh! I used to have a thing for color words (somewhere there is an Appleworks file with a bunch of Webster's Collegiate lookups painstakingly typed out--I may even have printed it before we sold the Apple) but had never thought to query this one. Prosaic but apt.

More or less my thought when I saw the etymology.
