sambuca (sam-BOO-kuh) - n., an Italian liqueur made from elderberries and flavored with anise.
Somewhat coincidentally, it's also the name of several obsolete musical instruments, most of them obscure, the most important of which is a stringed instrument of the ancient Near East (mentioned in Daniel 3:5-15). "Somewhat" because while most of the instruments are from Greek sambūcke, from Aramaic sabbeka, from sebak, to fasten, cling, from Semetic root sbk, the drink is from Italian sambuco, elder(berry), from Latin sambūcus -- but one of the instruments was an Italian woodwind made from elderwood. The liqueur was first imported into English in the early 1970s.
