pamir (pah-MEER) - n., a long, high-altitude, U-shaped glacial valley surrounded by mountains.
Found primarily in the Pamirs, the central Asian mountain range at the meeting of the Himalaya, Hindu Kush, Tian Shan, Karakoram, and Kunlun mountain ranges, in southeastern Tajikistan and northeastern Afghanistan, sometimes called the Roof of the World. It's not clear whether the valley named the mountains or vice versa, but the Great Pamir is not a mountain, but a valley on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and the Little Pamir another valley, entirely in Afghanistan.
